Virginia School District Upgrades to Safer, Multilayered Gym Floors

The Fairfax County, Va., Public School District recently replaced four school gymnasium floors with more that 45,000 sq. ft. of Taraflex Sports Flooring by the Atlanta-based Gerflor.

Administrators at the Frost Middle School installed a 4,800 sq. ft. Sport M Maple design floor in the gym. In addition to the school’s students, the county’s recreation department also uses the gym for its after-school and summer camp basketball and band programs.
After the 2002 school year ended, the poured urethane floors in the Fairfax High School field house and auxiliary gym were removed. Students returned for the start of the new school session to more that 28,000 sq. ft. of Sport M. The field house has a 23,000 sq. ft. main gym with a professional sized 50-ft by 94 ft. basketball court in the center with a blue border and side court keys. It is surrounded by two regular full-sized 50 ft. by 84 ft. basketball courts, a wiffleball field with inlaid red bases and five badminton courts marked by yellow game lines. The main and auxiliary hosts a wide range of athletic programs such as team basketball and volleyball games and practices, as well as physical education classes; including dance, floorball, and badminton.

Also installed in 2002 were new wood toned gym floors in the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology and the Great Fall Elementary School. Physical education classes and school teams use the 8,500 sq. ft. auxiliary gym at Jefferson High. Sport M replaced the former wood tile floor. Great Falls administrators covered the gym’s vinyl tile floor with 5,500 sp. ft. of Sport M.
